Tuesday, October 8, 2013— On the day of the Association of Black Communicator’s third meeting of the semester, members filed into the Curet Room of Hodges Hall. The meeting began with ABC President Bria Turner presenting opportunities for ABC to participate in a few very interesting Manship Centennial events. The group voted and decided to attend the Hall-Of-Fame Gala, set to take place Thursday, October 4th from 6-9 p.m. in the Bourbeau Ballroom in the Renassiance Hotel on Bluebonnet.
Guest speaker Sevetri Wilson, Manship alumna and former ABC member, gave a very relatable and inspiring speech about her journey and how she built her personal brand. Sevetri runs her own company, Solid Ground Innovations, LLC. This company began in 2009 as a consulting firm and has since expanded to specialize in sports philanthropy, nonprofit management, marketing and impact/cause marketing. She has recently created two parts to her business- SGI (for profit- marketing) and SGI Cares (non-profit and philanthropy). When asked why do clients choose her to manage them when they could choose anyone, she replied “People trust and like people who can execute a plan and are not solely driven by money.”
Sevetri has an array of clients, ranging from professional athletes to politicians around the country. She provided ABC members with a list of 10 very valuable tips on how to build and maintain your personal brand successfully. These tips included defining priorities in your personal and professional lives, always being open and positive and getting interested in other people. She stressed to members that the power of networking through the proper channels can result in tremendous progression.
