2012-2013: Year in Review

The 2012-2013 school year was a great one for ABC! We featured many accomplished speakers and the organization participated in great events.

Highlighting our list of speakers was CBS Sports Director Mark Grant. Grant discussed his career-journey as well as the ins and outs of a job in sports. Grant also took the time to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the details that go into directing a sporting event.

In the same meeting, Mary Ann Sternberg, Manship School Internship Coordinator, spoke to us about the importance of internships. She explained the internship process and how to receive course credit after completion of the internship.

In November, WBRZ reporter Adrian Pittman gave us the scoop on the process of landing a dream job in broadcasting. He told us about his journey to WBRZ and gave tips on organizing resume reels.

Additionally, The LSU Director of Student Media and representatives from The Daily Reveille, KLSU and Tiger TV spoke to us about how to get involved with student media on campus.

During the semester, we invited members of the Baton Rouge Area Association of Black Journalist,  Johnny Brooks and Michelle McCallope to speak. Brooks, The Advocate metro desk editor, taught us how to conduct interviews properly. McCalope ,BRAABJ President and WAFB  Neighborhood Reporter  told us her story and gave us some tips on success in magazine journalism. We also hosted both resume and writing workshops.

Louisiana state Senator Karen Carter Peterson, head of the Louisiana Democratic Party, took time during the legislative session to discuss  her role in the Party and her experience as a black woman in politics.

Ronnette Boshea King, formerly of NPR and The Times-Picayune, currently holds a public relations position at LSU’s School of Music and Dramatic Arts. King showed us ways we can make a positive impact with a job in journalism and how to dig deeper when covering a beat.

Outside of the normal meeting format, ABC also hosted two workshops to help members improve their brand and their skills. The first was a resume workshop where an employee from LSU’s Career Services gave members tips to create the resume that gets noticed by potential employers. We also hosted a writing workshop, taught by Manship Professor Roxanne Dill.

ABC also participated in the Geaux Big volunteer project, a new program to LSU. Members spent a Saturday completing various projects around Baton Rouge that benefited the community.

At the end of the year, we hosted our annual Media Mixer, where members had the opportunity to network with professionals over dinner.

Throughout the year our members made many connections with professionals in the communications field. We look forward to continued success in the 2013-2014 school year!
